Fatal workplace accident shuts down California construction site

On Behalf of | May 25, 2020 | Workplace Accidents |

Construction is one way to make improvements to a business or organization, allowing it to expand or just better meet the needs of existing clients. Unfortunately, there are inherent dangers associated with construction projects even with a variety of safety regulations in place. In fact, a man was recently killed in a workplace accident in California.

The accident happened at an international airport at approximately 6 a.m. Construction workers were completing work on a project called the Automated People Mover, a new train system for the airport. Unfortunately, reports indicate that a rebar column collapsed.

A worker was injured in the collapse. Though rescue workers administered CPR, the man reportedly died at the site of the accident. Both the local police department and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health are investigating; however, officials believe that the incident was an accident.

Though most workers and their employers in California are committed to safety, a workplace accident such as this can still occur, often with devastating consequences. In this incident, a family may now be left facing the after-effects of their unexpected loss. Though it will likely do little to reduce their grief, workers’ compensation insurance benefits — which employers are required to provide and can extend to certain family members in the event of a fatality such as this — can help with the financial fallout of their loss, helping with lost wages and funeral expenses. Because few people feel prepared to negotiate with an insurance company while grieving, there are experienced professionals who can help them as they seek the compensation that they deserve.
