California man suffers broken legs in industrial work accident

On Behalf of | Dec 27, 2012 | Industrial Workers' Accidents |

An industrial accident has resulted in severe injuries to a 19-year-old California worker. According to reports, the work injury occurred when the young man was working at Unico Mechanical Corp., which provides services for heavy industrial machines. It is believed that a three-ton steel beam, being lifted by a chain-and-hook grip, fell and landed on the man’s legs.

Emergency responders reported that even before they got to the scene, the beam had been removed by fellow workers and the man was awake. They say that when they got to the location, they found the man had multiple, severe breaks to both legs. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Preliminary reports indicate that the man is expected to survive his injuries.

The California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was scheduled to conduct a site survey in order to determine whether a fuller investigation is warranted. Unico Mechanical Corp. has not commented on the accident.

This young worker is fortunate. He is alive. He may face a long road to recovery. He may be disabled for years to come. Hopefully he is fully aware of his rights.

Whenever any California worker sustains a work injury while on the job, he or she may have the right to file a workers’ compensation claim. Workers’ compensation benefits are designed to provide financial relief so that the worker can focus on making a complete recovery.

Because of the complex, and sometimes lengthy, process that these claims can entail, workers may find themselves unsure of the full scope of the benefits to which they are entitled. Seeking the assistance of experienced legal counsel may be of help.
