9 hurt in construction accident; workers’ compensation may apply

On Behalf of | Apr 12, 2016 | Industrial Workers' Accidents |

A construction accident at an out-of-state medical center injured nine workers on a recent Friday morning, officials said. Shortly before 9:45 a.m., the accident occurred when a portion of the work site collapsed. When California workers are injured in similar accidents, they typically qualify for workers’ compensation benefits.

The construction crew was in the process of pouring concrete at the time of the accident. The official cause of the accident has yet to be determined. However, an official with the local fire department said there must have been some type of “divine intervention,” in that only nine of the 18 workers present at the site were injured.

The injured workers were rushed to a local medical center, in addition to other facilities in the Shreveport, Louisiana area. Their injuries were not considered life threatening. The $30 million project is expected to add more bed space as well as an additional ICU, which would be connected to the existing facility. Work was immediately halted, pending an investigation.

When job site accidents result in workers’ injuries, those workers are fully within their legal rights to file workers’ compensation claims. Successfully navigated, these claims may help injured workers with costs typical of injuries of this nature, including hospital bills, lost pay and even physical therapy. When California workers are injured on the job, they typically choose to consult an experienced workers’ compensation attorney to assist them with this process. Sometimes, a claim is denied initially, and a lawyer can provide ongoing support through the appeals process as well.
