California construction workers confront dangerous work environments on a daily basis, though workers should not be exposed to danger unnecessarily. When an individual suffers a work injury, he or she may decide to file a workers’ compensation claim. In the event of a workers’ death, the victim’s surviving family members may decide to file for workers’ compensation death benefits.

A fatal construction accident is under investigation by the California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the San Francisco Police Department’s traffic collision investigation unit. The accident occurred in San Francisco on a recent Friday in May. According to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office, the male victim was a 61-year-old San Francisco resident.

The worker, who was operating construction equipment on an ramp that travels below ground, was crushed between an overhead concrete beam and the cherry picker’s lift basket. Co-workers witnessed the tragic accident, and the victim was brought down almost immediately. However, he was pronounced dead a little after 8 a.m. at the accident scene, police say.

A California worker who is injured on the job has every right to seek legal advice and assistance after an accident occurs on the job. For individuals whose loved one suffers a fatal work injury, workers’ compensation death benefits are available through the state-supervised insurance fund. Successfully pursued, these benefits can help dependents pay for funeral expenses and compensate them for the sudden loss of income. This process is typically initiated by consulting an experienced workers’ compensation attorney.
