Health care workers are less likely to be injured in the workplace thanks to some new measures passed by a state safety board. The California Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently approved measures that would require more training and enforce violence prevention protocols. These new rules are intended to protect workers’ rights and make it less likely that people who work in this industry will be hit, kicked, bitten or grabbed.
Health care workers are exposed to various risks in their jobs. Many are subjected to inappropriate or violent contact from patients, threats from family members and exposure to sickness and other injuries. In the health care industry, workers face a higher risk of assault than in most other fields.
While there are safety standards already in place, these new measures are specifically designed to prevent violence. In instances where violence occurs, the employer could be held liable if a worker is injured and the appropriate safety protocols are not in place. When a worker is injured on the job, that individual is typically eligible for workers’ compensation benefits, regardless of his or her job description.
After a work accident or suffering a work injury, individuals would be wise to work with a lawyer experienced in protecting workers’ rights and navigating the California workers’ compensation system. Health care workers may find it frustrating to secure the benefits that they deserve, but an experienced lawyer can advocate for their rights and interests.
