Worker suffers fatal work injury in tragic construction accident

Officials recently identified a man who died in a recent construction accident. The man was 56-years-old. The fatal work injury occurred at an out-of-state job site on a recent Tuesday. Similarly, when fatal construction accidents occur in California, the deceased workers' families will likely be entitled to file for workers' compensation death benefits.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene of an active construction site around 12 p.m. Apparently, a worker was somehow struck by construction equipment and then ended up in the back of a truck that was in the process of carrying hot asphalt. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

The man's cause of death was ruled an accident by authorities in Connecticut. The man had suffered severe injuries in the form of trauma to his torso, head and lower-left extremity, the local medical examiner's office reported. Local police say that the victim suffered his injuries when he was struck by equipment that was similar to a backhoe.

Even though the worker's death was ruled an accident, the workers' compensation program in the state of California still aims to provide death benefits to individuals who were closely related to the deceased worker -- for example, a spouse, child or parent -- who were also financially dependent on that individual. The benefit's main purpose is to compensate dependent family members for their loss of financial support when a fatal work injury occurs. This compensation is also often used to help defray some of the end-of-life costs that are typically incurred by a decedent's family, including medical bills and funeral and burial costs. It is typical to consult an experienced workers' compensation attorney to assist with this process.
